09 April – Time for fresh woods and pastures new, as the poet wrote. Spring is in the air and it’s time to rev up away from the Frogs Hill Pits and get out and about. Last week I had a chance to stick my nose into the refurbished Coventry Transport Museum. Visit their website – www.transport-museum.com/ – to see what ‘s going on at this museum. In fact, there’s a lot going on including the Coventry Festival of Motoring, 25 and 26 August. In the meantime, there’s also a special exhibition – ‘Royalty on The Road’ from 6 April to 10 June. So, if you’re anywhere near Coventry, visit the birthplace of the British cycle and motor industry. I don’t know whether it presently has a Gordon-Keeble or a Lagonda – my own prized classics – or boasts an Auburn, as featured in ‘Classic Calls the Shots’ (just published), but next time I go I’ll find out.
Last November, when I visited the Classic Car Show at the NEC, I stopped by the Gordon Bennett (Ireland) Rally stand and picked up some info about this annual event – see www.gordonbennett.ie/ . This year the around-Ireland tour will take place on 8, 9 and 10 June (my birthday). Alas, I won’t be able to participate this year – but I can always hope for 2013!
News just in – Ferdinand Alexander (Butzi) Porsche has died in Salzburg, on 5 April, aged 76. The grandson of the Porsche founder, Butzi designed the 911, which succeeded the 356 in 1965. What a legacy!
